CUILIN - THE CAT WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD

Hello, my name is Cuilin and I have been on quite an adventure - I'll let my foster mum tell you about it!

One Wednesday night, Cats Protection received a call from a gentleman who had been having problems with a stray cat attacking and injuring his own cats. He had noticed this stray in the area for a number of months and had managed to trap it in his garage. He had tried a number of places to take the stray but had had no success. Running out of options, he contacted West Lothian Cats Protection who managed to find an emergency foster place. He then kindly drove a significant distance to bring the stray to the fosterer.

The fosterer scanned the cat for a microchip and the machine bleeped to say a chip had been located! She then contacted the national microchip register who informed her that the stray had been reported missing over a year earlier and had lived many, many miles from where he was found. The microchip register passed on the owner's details and the fosterer called them and gave them some unexpected, but very welcome, news - Cuilin had been found!!

Cuilin's owners then jumped in the car and drove to the fosterer's house for an emotional reunion! He recognised them immediately and was soon rolling about the floor having his tummy rubbed and his ears tickled whilst purring loudly. Then it was into the carrier for the journey home.

A happy ending for all!

Note from fosterer: I think that this story is the best illustration possible why you should get your cat microchipped. For approx £20 the vet inserts a microchip under the skin of the cat's shoulder blades in what is a painless procedure. When scanned by a special reader machine this chip displays a unique identification number against which the owners details have been registered. If found, a microchipped cat can be linked to it's owner in a matter of minutes.

Cuilin was found over a year after he went missing - and in a location over 30 miles away. Without a microchip and up to date contact details he would never have found his way home. His owners agree that having him home is the best Christmas present they could have wished for and that the microchip fee was the best £20 they'd ever spent.

If you haven't already done so - please microchip your cat. We hope that you never need it - but if you ever do you will be very glad you spent that £20.

Also, thank you to the gentleman who made the effort to seek help for the local stray in the first instance.

...... Oh, and Merry Christmas Cuilin - the cat who came in from the cold!
